Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2024 session of the Magnum Foundation Fellowship (NYC Work-Study Fellowship), a prestigious program that provides a unique opportunity for early-career photographers and photojournalists. This fellowship offers a project production grant, mentorship from industry leaders, and valuable arts administration experience. It is specifically designed for those at the beginning stages of their careers who are eager to deepen, expand, and complete a photography project based in New York City.
This program is open to photographers of all ages, and we strongly encourage individuals who have already completed at least one long-term project to apply, including recent graduates and self-taught photographers. The fellowship is ideal for those who are passionate about using their photographic skills to address social issues and who wish to engage with communities across New York City.
Throughout the fellowship, participants will work on an in-depth photography project that explores and highlights social issues, building meaningful relationships with their subjects and partnering with relevant local organizations. Fellows will be encouraged to experiment with different narrative forms and storytelling techniques, enriching their work through innovative approaches. Magnum Foundation staff and an extensive network of professionals will provide ongoing mentorship and project development support, ensuring that fellows have the guidance and resources they need to succeed. Regular bi-weekly meetings with the Magnum Foundation team will offer fellows the opportunity to share progress, receive feedback, and refine their documentary photography projects.
In addition to their project work, fellows will gain hands-on experience in arts administration by working two days per week in the Magnum Foundation office. This experience will allow fellows to become integral members of the Magnum Foundation team, contributing significantly to the organization's daily operations. Fellows will gain insight into the inner workings of an arts nonprofit, participating in a variety of activities, including research on social issues, exploration of emerging technologies and platforms, multimedia production, and event production. They will be matched with projects that align with their areas of expertise, such as arts administration, research, writing, video production, or graphic design, allowing them to leverage their skills while learning new ones. Additionally, fellows will be responsible for photographing and assisting with periodic evening events, further broadening their experience and engagement with the Magnum Foundation's work.
This fellowship is a rare opportunity for early-career photographers to advance their skills, build their professional network, and make a meaningful impact through their work in one of the world's most vibrant cities.
