From light meters to backlighting, from deep shadow to blinding glare, photography is defined by an ongoing dialogue with light. It is shaped not only by illumination, but by darkness, contrast, and the spaces in between. A celebrated photograph of Grand Central Station captures sunlight pouring through the building, illuminating dust in midair and turning an ordinary moment into something suspended and luminous.
The time of day plays a critical role in how an image is experienced. Morning, evening, sunrise, and sunset each bring their own character, influencing tone, texture, and atmosphere. A scene photographed at one hour may feel fleeting, while the same scene captured under different light can become striking and memorable. Light has the power to elevate the everyday into something impactful.
This call focuses on photographs in which light determines the image’s success—through its presence, its absence, or its precise location within the frame. Flare, glare, shadow, fill light, interior glow, nighttime illumination, and streaming sunlight are all part of this exploration. Such moments are found everywhere. Submissions should present images where light is an essential element rather than a supporting detail. All two-dimensional photographic media are accepted.
