The "Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Competition | A Contemporary Look at Architecture" is held every two years to honour the distinguished photographer Luis Ferreira Alves. Recognised for his ability to navigate the transition from analogue to digital photography, Alves is celebrated both in Portugal and internationally.

Luis Ferreira Alves’ work embodies a unique balance of "objective" clarity and "subjective" interpretation, capturing the architectural genius of Pritzker Prize-winning architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura. His photographs transcend mere representation, reflecting a profound understanding of architectural design informed by a visual tradition dating back to the Renaissance. Alves’ intimate connection with the architectural field enriches his work with unparalleled depth and artistry.

The Prize, established in collaboration with Alves’ heirs, is supported by a partnership between Porto City Council (CMP), Casa da Arquitectura (CA), and Cityscopio-Associação Cultural (CCA). Key institutional supporters include CCDRN, FAUP, FIMS, and OA. Major private sponsors include CIN, a globally recognized coatings company, BPI bank, and Canon. Metro do Porto also plays a role in raising awareness about this prestigious competition.
