The biennial "Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Competition | A Contemporary Look at Architecture" pays tribute to the legacy of Luis Ferreira Alves, a celebrated photographer renowned for seamlessly transitioning from analogue to digital mediums. His work has earned wide acclaim on both national and international stages.

Alves' photography offers a masterful interplay of objectivity and subjectivity, providing a profound perspective on the designs of celebrated Portuguese architects like Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura, both Pritzker Prize laureates. His images go beyond documenting spaces, drawing on centuries of visual tradition to explore the cultural and emotional depth of architectural forms. Alves’ deep connection to architecture as a practice and discipline enriches his work with authenticity and insight.

The Competition, established in his honour, is led by Porto City Council (CMP), Casa da Arquitectura (CA), and Cityscopio-Associação Cultural (CCA), in collaboration with Alves’ family. Institutional support comes from CCDRN, FAUP, FIMS, and OA, with significant contributions from private sponsors like CIN, a global leader in coatings, BPI, a prominent Portuguese financial institution, and Canon, a world leader in camera technology. Metro do Porto also lends its resources to promote the initiative across the city.
