The "Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Competition | A Contemporary Look at Architecture" is a biennial event that celebrates the life and work of the acclaimed photographer Luis Ferreira Alves. Renowned for bridging the worlds of analogue and digital photography, Alves’ contributions are recognized both nationally and internationally.
His photography provides a distinctive blend of "objective" and "subjective" perspectives on the work of eminent Portuguese architects such as Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura, both recipients of the Pritzker Prize. Alves’ images capture not only the visual essence of architectural spaces but also their deeper cultural and artistic significance, shaped by a centuries-old visual heritage originating from the Renaissance. His close relationship with the discipline of architecture adds depth and insight to his portrayals, elevating them beyond simple representation.
The Competition, rooted in this vision, operates under a protocol involving Alves’ heirs and its primary sponsors: Porto City Council (CMP), Casa da Arquitectura (CA), and Cityscopio-Associação Cultural (CCA). Significant institutional partners include CCDRN, FAUP, FIMS, and OA. Leading private sector partners, such as CIN, BPI, and Canon, add their support, alongside Metro do Porto, which aids in publicising this prestigious event.
