Kuala Lumpur Photography Award - Street Photography Portrait Prize

The 2024 edition focused on staged portraiture, a genre that allowed photographers to bring deliberate artistry and deeper meaning to their work. Judges were captivated by the way participants used lighting, posing, and composition to craft stories within each frame. For the 2025 Open Call, however, we’re pivoting to an entirely different style of portraiture—one that thrives on the raw, unfiltered energy of the street. Street portraiture is a demanding art form, often requiring photographers to work in fleeting, unplanned circumstances. The challenge of creating compelling portraits of strangers in public spaces can push even seasoned photographers out of their comfort zones.

With this year’s theme, CRITICAL EYE, we invite participants to embrace the spontaneity and complexity of street photography. The genre calls for a sharp sense of observation, a willingness to engage with the unexpected, and the technical skill to turn chance encounters into striking works of art. Street portraiture is not about perfection; it’s about authenticity. It captures the intersection of life and art, where the unscripted becomes extraordinary. As with the best studio setups, skill and intuition are critical to creating images that resonate.

This year, we encourage photographers to push their creative boundaries, embracing the unpredictability of the street. Whether capturing the vibrancy of a bustling city or the quiet moments in an overlooked corner, we’re looking for portraits that are enigmatic, evocative, and bold. Show us the world through your eyes—unfiltered, authentic, and unforgettable. Your mission is to impress the jury with portraits that evoke emotion, tell a story, and reflect the beauty of human connection in its most spontaneous form.
