Kuala Lumpur Photography Award - Street Photography Portrait Prize

The 2024 edition was a celebration of staged portraiture, offering our judges the opportunity to explore remarkable works that pushed the boundaries of the genre. These portraits did more than capture a face; they infused deeper meaning into every frame, showcasing storytelling, emotion, and artistry in carefully crafted compositions. For 2025, however, the Open Call is taking an entirely new direction. This year’s theme, street portraiture, invites photographers to step out into the unpredictable world of the streets, where fleeting moments and unplanned encounters create an entirely different creative challenge. Capturing striking portraits of strangers in public spaces can be an intimidating process, requiring courage, quick thinking, and an innate sensitivity to the environment.

CRITICAL EYE sets the stage for photographers to embrace this challenge, encouraging a keen and discerning observation of the world around them. Street portraiture demands a unique balance of spontaneity and intention—moments that appear casual but require both artistry and skill to frame effectively. While the medium is inherently unscripted, it’s no less complex than studio portraiture, often rivaling the most polished studio setups in its ability to tell compelling stories. Street photography has no fixed rules, and we encourage you to experiment, innovate, and explore the possibilities this genre offers. Whether in bustling urban settings or quieter corners of everyday life, we want to see portraits that are strong, enigmatic, and captivating, with the power to transport viewers into the moment they were taken.
