Kuala Lumpur Auto-Portrait Photo Contest

KLPA is thrilled to announce this year's Interim Edition Open Call, which delves into the compelling theme of self-portraiture. This edition seeks to explore and celebrate the powerful artistic expressions that arise when photographers turn the lens upon themselves. Since the early days of photography, when Robert Cornelius captured his iconic daguerreotype self-portrait in 1839, artists have been drawn to the idea of portraying themselves through their chosen medium. Acting simultaneously as both the photographer and the subject, artists have the unique opportunity to embark on a journey of self-discovery, using their art to reveal, enrich, and express their inner worlds.

This Interim Edition prize invites photographers from around the globe to submit their self-portraits for consideration. The call for entries is open from 1 September to 6 October 2024, offering a platform for artists to share their introspective works with a broader audience. In mid-October, a distinguished panel of international judges will convene to carefully select the winners and finalists from the submissions.

The Top 30 finalists will have their captivating self-portraits showcased at various partner festivals throughout 2024 and 2025. These works will be screened at selected venues, providing exposure to a wide international audience and reaching a global community of art enthusiasts. Additionally, the finalists' works will be promoted online to KLPA’s extensive network of followers, ensuring that the artists' voices resonate far and wide.

Looking ahead to 2025, a print exhibition featuring these outstanding self-portraits is planned at the renowned Hin Bus Depot in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. This exhibition will offer a tangible and immersive experience for viewers, further celebrating the diversity and depth of contemporary self-portraiture. Through this open call, KLPA continues to foster a vibrant artistic community, encouraging photographers to explore the profound possibilities of self-representation in their work.
