Kuala Lumpur Portrait Awards - A Stranger's Face: Travel Portraits Photography Award

Among the many genres of photography, travel photography holds a special appeal, fueled by the desire to explore distant places, encounter unfamiliar cultures, and immerse oneself in new environments. While landscapes, architecture, and food often serve as visual markers of these journeys, it is the people met along the way who ultimately shape the most powerful memories. Long after the journey ends, faces, gestures, and shared moments tend to linger far longer than locations alone.

For its 18th edition, KLPA invites photographers to reflect on these encounters through portraiture created during their recent travels. Though photographing strangers may seem effortless at first, creating portraits that feel intimate, intriguing, and emotionally resonant is anything but simple. Such images require curiosity, empathy, and the willingness to move beyond surface impressions, allowing time and attention to guide the photographic process.

Sometimes, a quiet acknowledgment or a simple smile is enough to bridge cultural and personal distances. These small acts of openness can lead to conversation, mutual understanding, and the trust needed to capture genuine moments. Through these exchanges, photographers gain new perspectives—not only on those they photograph, but on the world itself. In doing so, travel becomes more than movement across places; it becomes a shared human experience, illuminated through the lens.
