KH Fund - Women Documentary Grant 2027

Kari Howard was an exceptional storytelling editor whose work was guided by a deep appreciation for the moments that often go unnoticed yet reveal the essence of human experience. She championed writing that illuminated resilience in the face of hardship, dignity amid struggle, unexpected humor in everyday life, and the heartbreak that connects people across differences. For Kari, the most powerful stories were those that allowed readers to step outside themselves and encounter another person's reality with empathy and understanding.

She had a particular affection for stories of love and connection, and she was drawn to writing that captured a strong sense of place. Whether describing a windswept landscape, the textures and sounds of the natural world, or the vibrant energy of a bustling city street, she valued prose that immersed readers in an environment and made it feel alive. She believed that great writing could transport readers, enabling them to hear the rustle of leaves, feel the pulse of a neighborhood, or smell the aromas drifting from a nearby restaurant.

As an editor, Kari was known for her generosity, enthusiasm, and unwavering support of writers. She fostered an atmosphere of trust and creativity, encouraging journalists to experiment, take risks, and pursue unconventional approaches. She gave writers the confidence to ask one more question, revisit a scene, or reshape a narrative until it reached its fullest potential. Her editorial guidance was never about imposing authority but about helping writers discover the strongest version of their own voice.

Kari's emotional investment in storytelling was evident in her editing notes. She openly celebrated passages that moved her, often responding with a simple but heartfelt "sob!" when a line brought tears to her eyes. Equally cherished was her distinctive laughter, and many writers considered provoking that unmistakable burst of joy one of the highest compliments their work could receive.

Her passion for language extended beyond meaning to rhythm and sound. Discussions about sentence structure often centered on cadence and musicality, with Kari carefully considering whether a phrase should rise and fall in one pattern or another. A devoted lover of music, she approached prose much like a composition, believing that every sentence should have its own rhythm and flow. Through her work on the Nieman Storyboard newsletters, she consistently highlighted exceptional writing and paired literary recommendations with thoughtfully chosen pieces of music, creating connections between art forms that reflected her broad creative sensibilities.

Conversations with Kari about stories were often expansive, warm, and exploratory. She believed that insights emerged not only from focused analysis but also from casual observations and unexpected tangents. For her, these seemingly aimless discussions often revealed deeper truths about a story and helped uncover what truly mattered.

At the same time, Kari possessed a practical understanding of journalism and the realities of newsroom life. Beneath her warmth and imagination was a determined advocate who fought tirelessly for narrative journalism. Combining creativity with strategic thinking and strong negotiation skills, she became a powerful champion for writers and their stories, ensuring that meaningful, deeply reported narratives had the support and space they deserved.
