In 1990, with a strong desire to empower new voices in media and cultural creation, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation introduced its Grants program. Among its many initiatives is the coveted Photographer Grant, awarded each year to a French-speaking photographer under 35 years of age. This 10,000-euro grant is more than just a financial boost; it is an invitation to bring a unique and innovative documentary project to life. A jury composed of esteemed photography and media experts selects the winner, ensuring that each year's recipient demonstrates exceptional promise and creativity.
The Foundation's support goes far beyond monetary aid. It provides recipients with the momentum they need to advance in a competitive industry, opening doors to new opportunities and recognition. To be eligible, applicants must practice photography as their primary profession and have produced at least two published documentary works — these can be featured in newspapers, magazines, books, or exhibition catalogs.
Many now-renowned photographers owe part of their success to this grant. Sarah Caron (2000), Samuel Bollendorff (2001), Agnès Dherbeys (2005), Véronique de Viguerie (2006), Stéphanie Lacombe (2006), William Daniels (2007), and Elena Chernyshova (2011) are just a few of the talents recognized by the Foundation. In 2016, Anna Filipova was awarded for her compelling photographic series on Greenland, exposing the environmental and social consequences of mining.
Through their enduring commitment to nurturing creative excellence, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation Grants represent a shining example of encouragement and validation for the important work of documentary photographers around the world.
