Since its creation in 1990, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation has been committed to supporting emerging talent in the fields of media and culture through its prestigious Grants program. Among these initiatives is the Photographer Grant, an annual award designed specifically for young, French-speaking photographers under the age of 35. Each year, a talented individual receives a generous grant of 10,000 euros to support the development of an original, innovative documentary photography project. The selection is made by a distinguished jury composed of seasoned professionals from the fields of photography and media, ensuring the highest standards of excellence.
Beyond mere financial assistance, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation Grants serve as a powerful catalyst for young photographers, offering them a vital springboard that can propel their careers to new heights. Applicants must demonstrate a serious commitment to photography as their primary vocation and must have already authored at least two published documentary works, whether featured in the periodical press, printed in books, or included in exhibition catalogs.
Over the years, the Photographer Grant has helped launch the careers of many now-renowned photographers, including Sarah Caron (2000), Samuel Bollendorff (2001), Agnès Dherbeys (2005), Véronique de Viguerie (2006), Stéphanie Lacombe (2006), William Daniels (2007), and Elena Chernyshova (2011). In 2016, Anna Filipova was honored with the grant for her powerful photo essay on Greenland, documenting the profound effects of mining activities on local communities.
Thanks to its far-reaching vision and dedication to fostering creative excellence, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation Photographer Grant stands as a beacon of support and recognition for the evolving art of documentary photography.
