On the basis of merit, the awards recognize the brave and talented efforts of professional photographers from around the world. One of the most well-known news photography competitions in the world is the Istanbul Photo Awards.

The application is completely free, and the contest offers generous prizes to encourage the hard work and dedication of news photographers worldwide.

Photojournalists from all over the world pay a lot of attention to the Istanbul Photo Awards. In eight years, approximately 14,000 photographers entered the competition.

With his image of the Ebola outbreak, Daniel Berehulak won the Photo of the Year award in 2015. The international jury selected Abd Doumany's photograph of a wounded Syrian boy as Photo of the Year in 2016, and photographer Frederic Lafargue's photograph titled "Escaping from Daesh" was selected as Photo of the Year in 2017. With his image of a dead boy in a Bangladeshi refugee camp, Damir Sagolj won the Photo of the Year award in 2018. The image of an Israeli police security guard and a Palestinian woman taken by Ahmad Gharabli was selected as the 2019 Photo of the Year. The Hong Kong-based photojournalist Yik Fei Lam won Photo of the Year 2020. With the image Mom Love, Mohammed Shajahan won the 2021 Photo of the Year award. In 2022, Konstantinos Tsakalidis won the award for his Bloomberg photo about wildfires.

All of the winning pictures have the ability to mobilize people against wars and conflicts and introduce them to other cultures. From such a strong field, the jury, made up of prominent photographers from various fields, had a very difficult time choosing the best images of the year. The winners are chosen by an international jury every year.

Applications can be submitted online at http://istanbulphotoawards.com each year. At the conclusion of each year's jury meeting, the contest's outcomes are announced. Photographs that have won awards will be included in a photobook that will be distributed to professionals in the field of photography almost everywhere in the world. The book will also be shown at exhibitions in major galleries in Istanbul, Shanghai, New York, Vienna, Tokyo, and Moscow.
