Handicrafts Photo calls on photographers from across the globe to explore the world of handicrafts and craftsmanship through original and engaging photographic work. The project celebrates handmade production in all its diversity, bringing together images that examine traditional skills, contemporary craft practices, cultural heritage, and the people who keep these forms of knowledge alive.

Craftsmanship exists in countless forms and reflects the history, resources, beliefs, and identities of different communities. From pottery and ceramics to weaving, embroidery, textiles, woodworking, basketry, jewelry, sculpture, paper, glass, leather, and metalwork, handmade objects can carry stories that extend far beyond their physical appearance. Photographers are encouraged to investigate these stories and to consider what craftsmanship can reveal about a place, a culture, a community, or an individual.

Submissions may focus on artisans and craftspeople, their hands and gestures, the tools they use, the materials they transform, or the spaces in which they work. Photographers may document complete creative processes, from raw material to finished object, or concentrate on small details, textures, patterns, colors, and forms. Images of workshops, studios, markets, family businesses, cultural events, and communities connected to particular crafts are also welcome.

The project embraces both traditional documentary approaches and more experimental or artistic interpretations. Photographers may explore craftsmanship through portraiture, still life, environmental photography, conceptual work, visual storytelling, or close observation. The emphasis is on creating images that communicate a strong sense of place, process, human connection, or cultural meaning.

Handicrafts Photo also recognizes that craftsmanship is not static. Traditional practices continue to change, adapt, and find new expressions through contemporary artists and makers. The project therefore welcomes work that explores the dialogue between heritage and innovation, ancient techniques and modern design, inherited knowledge and individual creativity.

By bringing these perspectives together, Handicrafts Photo aims to create a visual record of the extraordinary variety of handmade traditions across the world while celebrating the skill, imagination, patience, and dedication involved in making by hand.

Photographers are invited to submit work that offers a fresh and personal interpretation of craftsmanship, captures the human stories behind handmade objects, and encourages viewers to look more closely at the cultural and creative value of the things we make.
