A tide is, in its most familiar form, the recurring movement of the sea as water levels rise and fall in response to natural forces. Yet the idea of a tide extends far beyond the shoreline. It can describe any movement of forces that reshape a landscape, influence a community, or gradually transform the conditions in which we live. This expanded understanding lies at the heart of the 21st edition of Getxophoto, which adopts Tide as a framework for examining how images circulate, evolve, and affect the social world.
In an age when photographs and visual content move continuously across physical and digital spaces, images rarely remain confined to their original purpose or context. They are copied, distributed, modified, collected, forgotten, and brought back into circulation. Each movement can alter the way an image is understood, allowing it to acquire new meanings as it encounters different audiences, places, and moments in time. Like the sea returning to a familiar shore, images reappear in circumstances that have changed, inviting us to reconsider what we thought we already knew.
The notion of a tide also evokes the momentum of collective forces. Social movements, political transformations, and cultural shifts can gather intensity, redirect public attention, and influence the course of events. These currents may appear to carry people in directions beyond their control, yet individuals and communities also help create and sustain them. Collective action can therefore become a force for change, opening up new possibilities for participation, solidarity, and resistance.
With Tide, Getxophoto 2027 calls on artists and practitioners working with photography, moving images, interventions, installations, digital media, and other visual forms to explore these interconnected processes. The open call welcomes projects that go beyond observing collective life and instead contribute to its construction. The festival is interested in artistic proposals that bring hidden experiences into view, question seemingly permanent structures, reinterpret shared histories, and establish unexpected connections between people and places. Projects that explore new forms of collective agency or imagine ways of resisting dominant social, political, and cultural currents are encouraged. Through these diverse approaches, the festival seeks to investigate the potential of images to participate in the transformation of contemporary life.
