Getxophoto Festival - Open Call 2027

The sea's tides offer a powerful image of constant change: a recurring movement in which water advances, withdraws, and reshapes the coastline over time. This natural phenomenon can also serve as a metaphor for the many forces that influence our surroundings and transform the ways we experience the world. Drawing on this idea, the 21st edition of Getxophoto presents Tide as a theme through which to examine the changing nature of images and their role in shaping collective experience.

Rather than treating photography as a permanent, self-contained object, this edition approaches it as something fluid, continually moving between different contexts and interpretations. Images circulate through networks, cross geographical and cultural boundaries, and travel between generations. They may be reproduced, recontextualised, stored away, or rediscovered after long periods of absence. As they move, their meanings are never entirely fixed: a photograph can take on a new significance when viewed through the lens of contemporary events, personal experiences, or changing social values. Every return becomes an opportunity to see the familiar differently.

The idea of a tide also speaks to the power of movements that bring people together. Political struggles, social transformations, and cultural developments can create currents that gather momentum and alter the direction of collective life. At the same time, these forces are not simply imposed from outside. People contribute to them through their actions, relationships, and shared experiences, becoming participants in the very movements that shape their communities. A tide can therefore suggest both the pressure of external circumstances and the possibility of collective empowerment.

Getxophoto 2027 invites artists to respond to these ideas through projects involving photography, video, live actions, installations, digital art, and other forms of visual expression. The open call seeks work that engages critically and creatively with the movement of images, the construction of collective identities, and the possibilities of social change. Proposals might reveal stories that have been overlooked, disrupt established ways of seeing, challenge accepted versions of history, or explore how new relationships and forms of resistance can emerge. Rather than simply representing communities, the selected projects are encouraged to consider how artistic practices can help build connections, stimulate participation, and create spaces for collective action. Under the theme Tide, the festival invites image-makers to explore photography as an active force within a world defined by movement, transformation, and the ongoing negotiation of shared realities.
