According to Getty Images’ VisualGPS research, less than 1% of visuals in media and advertising include members of the LGBTQ+ community, with many images focused on Pride celebrations as a defining event across the community. We are partnering with GLAAD to help increase visibility of the LGBTQ+ community while also challenging harmful, cliched visual stereotypes. Traditional cultural and family norms can often overshadow expression of LGBTQ+ identity. At the same time, the modern definition of family has expanded to include any configuration of individuals who provide support for one another. This year’s creative grant, Chosen Family, will provide financial support and mentorship to four videographers and photographers who are authentically showcasing and exploring celebrations, events and actions across a broad range of people and groups that are part of ‘chosen families’ for commercial purposes, outside of stereotypical Pride celebration imagery. This includes new family norms and cultural traditions as they relate to LGBTQ+ communities around the world. A ‘chosen family’ is defined by those who have intentionally come together, whether legally recognized or not, to embrace, nurture, love, and support each other regardless of blood or marriage.
