For the first time, the competition does not impose a specific theme, opening the field to the photographers’ individual perspectives, interests and creative visions. Rather than directing participants towards a particular subject, we wish to create a space in which each photographer can define the focus of their work and demonstrate what photography means within their own artistic practice.

We invite photographers to submit bodies of work distinguished by a strong conceptual coherence, a clearly articulated artistic vision and a thoughtful relationship between the individual images. We are not necessarily seeking works that address unprecedented subjects, nor do we believe that originality should be pursued as an end in itself. A project does not need to be entirely new in its subject matter in order to be compelling or original.

Originality can instead emerge through the particular way in which a photographer looks at, interprets and translates the reality they encounter. It may reside in the photographic language employed, in the construction and rhythm of the narrative, in the sequencing of images, or in the photographer’s ability to approach familiar subjects, places or ideas from a distinctive and deeply personal perspective.

In this sense, a body of work can be original even when the subject itself is familiar. What gives a project its identity is the presence of a conscious artistic vision: an intentional way of seeing that brings together subject, form, narrative and meaning. We are interested in projects in which this vision is perceptible throughout the work, revealing an underlying structure and a clear sense of purpose. Above all, we seek bodies of work in which the photographer’s individual voice is present and recognisable, and in which every image contributes to the development of a coherent artistic statement.
