FOTODOKS Open Call 2025

FOTODOKS will return to Munich (DE) in 2025, featuring a group exhibition and a four-day program that deeply engages with photography’s multi-layered nature. The event will emphasize how images convey emotional, historical, and cultural dimensions, drawing inspiration from Tina Campt, a Black feminist theorist of visual culture. Starting 15 October 2024, an open call invites artists to contribute to the festival’s upcoming edition, based on this idea.

Under the theme "Feedback," FOTODOKS encourages professional lens-based artists and photographers worldwide to submit their work. 'Feedback,' originally a technical term, reflects the process of nourishing and returning, but today it also relates to how photography mediates the flow of information—both facilitating and complicating communication.

In today’s era of viral content and algorithm-driven platforms, every image elicits a response, often amplifying pre-existing biases. FOTODOKS 2025 will explore these feedback loops, addressing how images influence ideas of empathy, resistance, and belonging while also navigating political and ecological tensions. Photography has evolved from capturing moments to becoming a network of meanings shaped by viewer interaction.

Against the backdrop of political polarization, conflicts, and shifting ideologies, the theme Feedback underscores FOTODOKS’ commitment to examining photography’s growing social responsibility. The open call seeks to inspire artists to question how images are produced, circulated, and consumed, bringing together projects that explore these dynamics in our contemporary world—whether through social interactions, identity formation, or reflections on the medium itself.

In addition to the submissions, the FOTODOKS curatorial team will also invite specific artists. FOTODOKS is committed to inclusivity and encourages submissions from people of all identities and backgrounds. Applications can be submitted in English or German, by individuals or groups.
