Black Box Gallery is proud to present a juried exhibition centered on one of photography’s most enduring themes: the dynamic interaction of shadow and light. Since the earliest days of the medium, image-makers have relied on the balance between dark and light areas to build composition, articulate detail, and shape meaning. Shadows do more than simply mark the absence of light; they enrich spatial depth, define contours, and create tension that heightens the viewer’s engagement. Historically, photographers working in black and white have pushed the expressive potential of stark, dramatic shadows, while contemporary artists continue to expand the field by exploring subtle gradients, atmospheric color palettes, and textural shadow forms. For this show, we will consider a wide range of photographic interpretations that demonstrate how today’s photographers utilize shadow and light to craft compelling visual narratives.
