F.D. Prize - Photo Award for Female Photojournalists

Beginning in 2020, the Ministry of Culture and the renowned international photojournalism festival Visa pour l’Image established a dedicated grant program aimed at recognizing and empowering female photographers. Each year, two production grants—each worth 8,000 euros—are awarded to women who demonstrate exceptional commitment and vision in the realm of photojournalism. The goal of this initiative is not only to provide practical support for new projects, but also to amplify the voices of women within a field where they have historically been underrepresented.

This annual award is named in honor of Françoise Demulder, an influential French photojournalist and war photographer. Her legacy is monumental: in 1977, she became the first woman to be awarded the prestigious World Press Photo of the Year, marking a significant milestone in the history of photography. Through this grant, her pioneering spirit and the barriers she broke continue to serve as a guiding light for contemporary and emerging female photojournalists across the globe.
