In a world where the voices behind the lens have often gone unheard, the Ministry of Culture and Visa pour l’Image took a bold and necessary step in 2020. Every year since, they have awarded two exceptional female photojournalists with production grants of 8,000 euros each. These grants are more than financial aid—they are a powerful acknowledgment of the courage, perspective, and unique storytelling that women bring to the field of photojournalism.
This initiative is deeply rooted in the memory of Françoise Demulder, a trailblazing French war photographer whose career challenged conventions and opened doors for generations of women to come. In 1977, she became the first female recipient of the World Press Photo of the Year—an achievement that shattered glass ceilings and expanded the possibilities for women behind the camera. The grant bearing her name honors not just her remarkable work, but her enduring influence on the craft and on the countless women who follow in her footsteps.
