The EURORDIS Photo Award serves as an international platform inviting individuals to visually communicate the lived experience of rare diseases. Each photograph provides a meaningful contribution to public awareness by revealing the realities faced by the rare disease community and sharing these narratives with a global audience.
Participation is open to individuals from any country and from all rare disease backgrounds. Over the years, thousands of exceptional photographs have been submitted, each one reflecting the determination, strength, and diversity of people living with rare diseases worldwide. These images have become a valuable resource in fostering understanding, empathy, and recognition across society.
To ensure that submissions meet ethical requirements and respect personal rights, consent procedures are mandatory. The submitter must be 18 years of age or older. Prior to submission, you are required to obtain consent from all individuals who appear in the photograph and are 14 years old or older, as well as from the legal parents or guardians of any subjects under the age of 18. Additionally, permission must be secured from the photographer and the individual holding the Intellectual Property Rights for the image. This ensures that EURORDIS can legally receive, promote, and use your photo.
At the conclusion of the submission form, you will be asked to confirm that you have read and understood our Terms, Conditions, and Intellectual Property Rights and our Personal Data Consent Document. You will then provide a virtual signature indicating that all required authorisations have been obtained on behalf of all individuals involved.
An expert jury led by the award-winning documentary photographer Marcus Bleasdale will review all entries and select five finalists based on artistic quality, emotional impact, and relevance.
Public online voting will begin on 9 February 2026 and will remain open until the winners are determined. The final results will be unveiled during the EURORDIS Black Pearl Awards ceremony on 24 February 2026. Prizes will be awarded to the three finalists who receive the highest number of public votes. For a full overview of deadlines, procedures, and prize details, please consult our Procedures Document.
