The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation inaugurated the Environmental Photography Award in 2021 as part of its mission to advance environmental awareness through art and visual storytelling. This annual competition seeks to recognize the invaluable contribution of photographers who dedicate their craft to raising global consciousness about the pressing need to safeguard our planet.
The Award embodies a dual purpose: to showcase the extraordinary beauty of the Earth and to illuminate the many ways in which human beings engage with nature. These relationships may reveal harm and degradation, yet they also highlight resilience and positive transformation. To reflect this diversity, the competition is structured around five categories: Polar Regions, Forests, Ocean, Humanity versus Nature, and Changemakers.
Each year, close to 10,000 photographs are submitted from across the world, demonstrating the universal resonance of the Award’s message. An international jury of distinguished professional photographers undertakes the challenging task of reviewing the entries, ultimately selecting 36 finalists, the category winners, and the overall laureate. The competition further encourages participation through the Public Award and the Students’ Choice Award, ensuring that recognition extends beyond expert opinion to include the voices of wider communities.
The Environmental Photography Award’s influence has extended well beyond its origins in Monaco. Traveling exhibitions have already been hosted in several countries, including Italy, San Marino, Spain, the United States, Canada, and France, offering international audiences the opportunity to witness the power of photography in environmental advocacy. In addition, the annual publication of a dedicated book ensures that the selected works continue to inspire reflection long after the competition concludes.
Today, the Environmental Photography Award stands as one of the Foundation’s flagship initiatives and a central element of its Green Shift program. By celebrating creativity, fostering awareness, and promoting dialogue, the Award affirms the essential role of photography in shaping a collective vision for a more sustainable future.
