Duckling - Duckling Seed Grant

Duckling is an international new media platform focused on documentary photography and visual storytelling, bringing together photographers, storytellers, and audiences around stories that deserve to be seen and heard. The platform provides a space for creative exchange, professional development, and discovery, offering members access to masterclasses, the Duckling Seed Grant, and future opportunities as the community continues to expand. Membership is more than a way of supporting the platform: it is an opportunity to become part of an international network of people committed to exploring the world through photography and to collectively building an archive of stories that might otherwise go undocumented.

As part of this broader mission, Duckling created the Duckling Seed Grant, a monthly production grant intended to help photographers transform new ideas into actual projects. The grant focuses specifically on work that has not yet been made, supporting photographers at the crucial moment between having an idea and being able to produce it. Duckling believes that some of the most important stories never reach the public simply because their creators cannot afford to begin. Even relatively modest costs—such as transportation, research, equipment, access, or the ability to take time away from other work—can determine whether a project moves forward or remains an idea.

The Seed Grant seeks to make that first step more accessible by providing up to €1,300 in production support each month. Rather than imposing strict conditions on how the funding must be spent, Duckling offers recipients considerable freedom and flexibility. Every documentary project is different, and the resources required to bring one story to life may have little in common with those needed for another. For this reason, the grant can be used according to the recipient’s priorities, whether that means financing a journey, conducting preliminary research, purchasing or renting equipment, gaining access to a particular subject or location, covering production costs, or simply creating enough time to concentrate on the work.

The principle is straightforward: the funding should serve the story, not the other way around. Duckling is less concerned with controlling individual expenses than with helping photographers create work that is thoughtful, original, and meaningful. By removing some of the financial pressure associated with beginning a project, the Seed Grant gives emerging ideas a better chance of becoming completed stories.

The relationship does not end when the funding period is over. Recipients publish their resulting work on Duckling and are also encouraged to share a short reflection on how the project was developed. These reflections offer insight into the realities of documentary practice, from initial research and creative decisions to unexpected obstacles and discoveries along the way. In doing so, each funded project contributes not only another story to Duckling’s growing archive, but also another piece of knowledge that can benefit the wider community of photographers and storytellers.
