Duckling was founded on a simple belief: important stories deserve to be told, and the people who tell them deserve meaningful support. As a new media platform dedicated to documentary photography and visual storytelling, Duckling brings together photographers from across the world to learn, collaborate, publish their work, and help shape a stronger future for documentary storytelling.

Our platform is designed to be more than a destination for published stories. It is a community where photographers can access masterclasses, discover new opportunities, apply for funding through the Duckling Seed Grant, and connect with fellow storytellers who share a commitment to documenting the realities of our world. Every new member strengthens this community, helping build an international network of photographers while contributing to a growing archive of stories that capture diverse cultures, social issues, and human experiences.

One of Duckling's central initiatives is the Duckling Seed Grant, a monthly production grant that supports documentary projects before they exist. Too often, remarkable ideas never become reality because photographers cannot afford the initial costs of producing them. Whether those costs involve travel, research, gaining access, purchasing equipment, or simply taking time away from paid work, financial barriers frequently prevent important stories from being documented.

The Seed Grant was created to remove those barriers. Each month, Duckling provides up to €1,300 in funding with as few restrictions as possible, trusting photographers to decide what their project needs most. We believe every story is different, and every photographer understands their own production process better than anyone else. Instead of prescribing how the money should be spent, we focus on supporting the work itself and encouraging ambitious, thoughtful documentary storytelling.

Recipients are invited to publish their completed stories on Duckling and accompany them with a short reflection about their experience—from developing the original idea to navigating the practical and creative challenges of production. By sharing both the finished work and the journey behind it, recipients contribute knowledge that benefits the entire community, creating a cycle in which every funded project not only tells an important story but also helps future storytellers bring their own ideas to life.
