Duckling - Duckling Seed Grant

Duckling is a new media platform created for documentary photographers and visual storytellers who want to explore the world through images, research, and narrative. More than simply a publishing space, Duckling brings together storytellers from different backgrounds and countries, providing opportunities to learn, connect, and develop new work. Members can access masterclasses, participate in the platform’s growing international community, and discover opportunities designed to support their creative development. By joining Duckling, photographers also contribute to a collective effort to build an evolving archive of stories from around the world—one that celebrates different perspectives, places, people, and ways of seeing.

At the heart of this mission is the Duckling Seed Grant, a monthly production grant dedicated to projects that are still at the idea or development stage. Duckling recognizes that a powerful story often begins with something very small: an idea, a question, a place to visit, or a person whose story deserves to be documented. Yet turning that initial idea into a finished project can be difficult when basic production costs stand in the way. A lack of funding can prevent photographers from traveling, conducting research, gaining access, purchasing necessary equipment, or simply dedicating enough uninterrupted time to their work.

The Seed Grant was created to address exactly this problem. Each month, Duckling provides funding of up to €1,300 to help photographers take the first concrete steps toward producing a new documentary project. The grant intentionally places very few restrictions on how the money can be used. Instead of imposing a fixed production budget or requiring applicants to spend the funding in specific categories, Duckling gives recipients the freedom to identify what their individual project needs most. The money might support travel, research, equipment, production, access, or simply provide the time necessary to focus fully on developing the story.

This flexibility reflects Duckling’s belief that every project has different requirements and that photographers themselves are best positioned to determine how resources should be allocated. What ultimately matters is not the specific expense, but the opportunity the funding creates: the chance for an idea that might otherwise remain unrealized to become a strong and meaningful body of work.

Following production, recipients are invited to publish their projects through Duckling and share a brief reflection about their process. By opening up the experience behind the final images, the Seed Grant also becomes a learning opportunity for the wider community. Photographers can share what they discovered, what challenges they encountered, and how their approach evolved throughout the project. In this way, the grant supports not only the creation of new stories, but also the exchange of knowledge and experience that helps documentary photography continue to grow.
