Duckling is a new media platform dedicated to documentary photography and visual storytelling, bringing together photographers, journalists, and storytellers from around the world through education, collaboration, publishing, and financial support. Our mission is to create an environment where important stories can be developed, shared, and preserved while providing creators with the tools and opportunities they need to sustain their practice.

The platform offers members access to professional masterclasses, funding opportunities such as the Duckling Seed Grant, exclusive educational resources, and a growing international network of documentary photographers. By joining Duckling, members are not only investing in their own development but also supporting an independent platform dedicated to advancing documentary storytelling. Together, the community is building an ever-growing archive of visual narratives that document the complexities, challenges, and beauty of our world.

To address one of the biggest obstacles facing independent photographers—the cost of starting a project—Duckling established the Duckling Seed Grant. Awarded monthly, the grant provides up to €1,300 in production funding for documentary projects that have yet to be produced. We believe that countless meaningful stories remain untold because photographers often lack the financial resources necessary to begin reporting, researching, or photographing them.

Rather than imposing strict spending requirements, Duckling gives recipients the freedom to allocate the funding according to the unique needs of their project. The grant may be used for travel, accommodation, research, equipment, permits, access, translation, production expenses, or simply to create the time needed to focus on the work. Our priority is not how the budget is spent, but whether it enables the creation of a compelling documentary story with lasting value.

Grant recipients contribute back to the community by publishing their completed project on Duckling alongside a short written reflection describing their process, the challenges they encountered, and the lessons they learned. This exchange transforms each funded project into both a published documentary and a practical educational resource, strengthening the community while encouraging new generations of visual storytellers to pursue ambitious ideas.
