Duckling is a new media platform built around documentary photography, visual journalism, and contemporary storytelling. Conceived as both a publishing space and a creative community, Duckling connects photographers and storytellers from around the world through shared experiences, educational resources, and collaborative opportunities. Members gain access to masterclasses, future initiatives, and a growing network of visual storytellers committed to documenting the complexities of contemporary life through photography.
The platform was created with the understanding that strong visual storytelling depends not only on talent, but also on access, support, and community. By becoming a member, photographers directly contribute to the sustainability of an independent platform dedicated to documentary practice while also joining an international collective focused on preserving and sharing stories that might otherwise remain unseen. Together, contributors help build an evolving archive of personal narratives, social realities, and cultural moments captured through photography.
One of Duckling’s central initiatives is the Duckling Seed Grant, a monthly production grant aimed specifically at projects that have not yet been realized. Many important stories never move beyond the idea stage because photographers are unable to secure the initial funding required to begin. The Seed Grant exists to bridge that gap by providing up to €1,300 in financial support with as much creative freedom as possible.
Rather than prescribing how funds should be used, Duckling prioritizes flexibility and trust. The grant may support travel, research, equipment, production expenses, access to locations or communities, or simply provide the time necessary to fully develop a project. The emphasis is not on rigid structures or expectations, but on enabling photographers to create meaningful, thoughtful, and impactful work. In exchange, grant recipients publish their stories through Duckling and share insights into their process, creating a valuable learning resource for the wider community of documentary photographers and storytellers.
