Doctors of the World Spain proudly launches the 29th edition of the Luis Valtueña International Award, an initiative that champions the power of photography as a tool for social change. This award is dedicated to recognizing exceptional humanitarian and documentary photography that courageously exposes social injustices, human rights violations, and the conditions that either perpetuate or challenge them. Through these visual stories, the competition aims to raise awareness, spark dialogue, and inspire action.
The award is named in honor of Luis Valtueña, a photojournalist and humanitarian aid worker who, alongside three colleagues, lost his life in the line of duty—two in Rwanda (1997) and one in Bosnia (1995)—while working with Doctors of the World. By commemorating their dedication and sacrifice, the award upholds the fundamental values of human dignity, empathy, and solidarity. It serves not only as a memorial to their courage but also as a call to action for others to bear witness and give voice to those whose stories need to be told.
