Doctors of the World Spain is proud to announce the 29th edition of the prestigious Luis Valtueña International Award, an esteemed recognition that honors outstanding contributions in the realm of humanitarian and documentary photography. This annual competition seeks to celebrate and bring visibility to compelling photographic works that shed light on pressing social issues, injustices, and human rights violations around the world. These works often reflect both the harsh realities faced by marginalized communities and the efforts taken to fight against or prevent such suffering.
The award is named in memory of Luis Valtueña, a photographer and international aid worker whose life was tragically cut short while on a humanitarian mission. Alongside three fellow aid workers from Doctors of the World, he was killed—two in Rwanda in 1997 and one in Bosnia in 1995—while courageously delivering aid in war-torn regions. By dedicating this award to their memory, we not only honor their sacrifice but also uphold the values they represented: compassion, courage, commitment, and solidarity. These principles continue to serve as the foundation of this award and inspire each edition.
