With Seen / Unseen, we invite photographers to engage with the nuanced relationship between visibility and invisibility, exploring how images can simultaneously reveal and conceal. The theme encourages a deeper reflection on what lies within the photograph—not only in terms of what is clearly presented, but also what is hidden, suggested, or intentionally left out. This approach may manifest in portraiture, environmental imagery, or conceptual work where meaning is not directly stated but subtly inferred.
We are particularly interested in photographs that embrace tension and contradiction. Images that sit between presence and absence, between sharp definition and uncertainty, or between openness and secrecy often create a richer viewing experience. In these cases, the photograph extends beyond its surface: what is visible becomes only one part of the narrative, while what is obscured, implied, or unresolved invites viewers to engage more actively and interpret more deeply.
The openness of this theme allows for a wide range of responses across different styles and subjects. Artists may choose to explore it through human stories, spatial investigations, or constructed visual scenarios. Ultimately, the strongest works will not rely on explanation or direct representation. Instead, they will embody the essence of Seen / Unseen, using the inherent qualities of photography—light, framing, timing, and absence—to communicate layered ideas and emotional depth.
