Seen / Unseen is an open invitation to explore the delicate boundary between visibility and obscurity within photographic practice. It encourages submissions that reflect not only what is immediately perceptible in an image, but also what remains concealed—whether hidden within the frame, embedded in the subject, or suggested through the photograph’s structure and atmosphere. This duality can emerge through portraiture, narrative imagery, or more abstract compositions where meaning is implied rather than explicitly defined.
We are particularly drawn to photographs that sustain a sense of tension—works that exist in the space between presence and absence, between what is revealed and what is withheld. Images that balance clarity with ambiguity, or exposure with concealment, often invite deeper engagement from the viewer. In such works, what is visible is only one layer of interpretation; what is hinted at, obscured, or left unresolved becomes equally significant, shaping the emotional and conceptual impact of the photograph.
The theme is intentionally broad and open-ended, allowing for a wide range of creative approaches. Artists may respond through depictions of people, explorations of environments, or carefully constructed and staged imagery. Rather than simply illustrating the concept, the most compelling submissions will embody it—using the language of photography itself to express complexity, subtlety, and layered meaning without the need for direct explanation.
