Submissions for the inaugural Open Call Exhibition, a significant part of the Chennai Photo Biennale Edition 4, will be accepted starting on July 20, 2024. This groundbreaking edition of the Biennale, set to run from December 20, 2024, to March 16, 2025, promises to be an exceptional showcase of photographic art, featuring a wide array of exhibitions under the broad and thought-provoking theme of ‘Why Photograph?’ This theme invites artists and photographers to explore the ever-evolving role of photography in contemporary society, encouraging a deep reflection on how photographic practices continue to shape, influence, and mirror the world around us.
Artists and photographers from all over the world, regardless of age or experience level, are warmly invited to submit their work for consideration in this landmark event. The Biennale welcomes submissions across a vast spectrum of photographic genres, including, but not limited to, nature photography, portraiture, documentary work, still life, and landscape photography. In addition, artists who work with lens-based images that intersect with other art forms—such as performance art, painting, sculpture, music, and literature—are strongly encouraged to submit their creations. This open call aims to push the boundaries of traditional photography by embracing work that challenges conventional definitions of the medium.
Submissions are welcome in all photographic formats, whether created with analogue or digital cameras. The Biennale also highly encourages the submission of images produced through alternative processes, such as contact printing or experimental cameraless techniques. However, it is essential to note that images created through generative fill or fully generated by artificial intelligence are not permitted for this Open Call, as the Biennale remains focused on celebrating human creativity and the tangible processes of photographic creation.
An esteemed international jury, composed of respected professionals from the fields of photography, art, and curation, will meticulously review all submissions. The jury will shortlist the most compelling projects and images, which will then be featured in the Open Call Exhibition. These selected works will be prominently displayed in a highly visible public space in Chennai, in line with the Biennale's mission to make photographic art accessible to the public and to foster greater engagement with the medium.
Public art has always been a cornerstone of the Chennai Photo Biennale. In previous editions, the Biennale has transformed public spaces such as parks, beaches, and train stations into vibrant galleries, bringing photographic works into the heart of the city where they can be experienced by all. The fourth edition of the Biennale will continue this tradition, furthering its commitment to enhancing public awareness and appreciation of photography. The Open Call provides photographers with the rare opportunity to submit their work without the constraints of a predetermined theme, offering them the freedom to present images that convey their individual perspectives and artistic visions.
This Open Call Exhibition is an extraordinary opportunity for photographers and artists to become part of a globally recognized platform, where their work will contribute to a dynamic and ongoing conversation about the significance of photography in our rapidly changing world. By participating, artists will not only showcase their work to an international audience but also engage in a broader dialogue about the power and potential of photographic art in contemporary society.
