For over a quarter of a century, Canon has championed the voices and perspectives of women in the field of visual journalism through the Canon Women Photojournalist Grant. Now in its twenty-sixth year, the grant continues to honor a photographer whose work contributes meaningfully to the evolving landscape of photojournalism, offering both recognition and vital support for future storytelling.
Each year, the award is presented in Perpignan as part of the globally respected Visa pour l’Image – Perpignan International Photojournalism Festival, a gathering point for professionals dedicated to documenting the realities of our world. Backed by an €8,000 grant from Canon, this initiative is designed to give a female photojournalist the resources needed to pursue a compelling project—one that sheds light on underreported issues, amplifies diverse perspectives, or captures pivotal moments with clarity and depth.
The grant is open to professional women photojournalists regardless of age or nationality, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and international dialogue. Candidates are evaluated by a jury of respected figures from the fields of photography and journalism, who bring their expertise to bear in selecting a project that stands out for both its visual strength and its journalistic integrity. Particular attention is given to the originality and relevance of the subject, as well as the photographer’s ability to engage audiences through powerful imagery.
Announced each June, the winner joins a lineage of photographers whose work continues to inform, challenge, and inspire audiences worldwide.
