Every year, this prestigious photography competition invites ecologists, wildlife photographers, researchers, and nature enthusiasts from around the world to tell the most inspiring, surprising, and important stories about ecology through the power of photography. Whether capturing rare wildlife, documenting fragile habitats, or revealing the hidden interactions that shape our environment, the competition celebrates images that connect audiences with the natural world and encourage greater awareness of conservation and biodiversity.
An expert judging panel, made up of internationally respected wildlife photographers, ecologists, and specialists in environmental science, carefully evaluates each submission for both artistic quality and ecological significance. The competition honors photographs that not only showcase the beauty of nature but also reflect the complexity of ecosystems and the vital role they play in sustaining life across the planet.
The competition is open to photographers of all backgrounds and experience levels. Entry is free for members of the British Ecological Society (BES), while photographers who are citizens of, or reside in, countries in the Global South can also participate without paying an entry fee. Young photographers are especially encouraged to take part, with the competition welcoming submissions from entrants under the age of 18 and offering an inclusive platform for emerging talent to share meaningful stories about the natural world.
