Each year, ecologists, conservationists, and wildlife photographers from across the globe come together to share some of the most powerful, thought-provoking, and visually striking stories about the natural world through this internationally recognized photography competition. From extraordinary wildlife encounters to intimate glimpses of fragile ecosystems, the prize celebrates images that deepen our understanding of ecology and inspire greater appreciation for the planet we all depend on.
Entries are evaluated by an esteemed panel of internationally respected wildlife photographers, ecologists, and subject specialists, ensuring that both artistic excellence and ecological significance are recognized. The competition highlights the incredible diversity, beauty, and complexity of nature while showcasing the ecosystems that sustain life on Earth and the urgent need to protect them for future generations.
Open to photographers of all experience levels, the competition is free to enter for members of the British Ecological Society (BES). Entry fees are also fully waived for photographers who are citizens of, or currently reside in, countries within the Global South, helping to make the competition more accessible and inclusive. Young photographers are warmly encouraged to participate as well, with the competition welcoming entries from participants under the age of 18.
