Since its inception in 2013, the BPM (Biennale de la Photographie de Mulhouse) has established itself as a major cultural event dedicated to contemporary photography, welcoming artists and audiences from across Europe and beyond. Held in the border region of the Grand Est, the festival is an open, inclusive, and thought-provoking space that celebrates photography’s diversity as an artistic, documentary, and experimental medium. What sets BPM apart is its commitment to a thematic reinvention with each edition, ensuring that every festival offers a fresh exploration of photography’s role in our changing world.
Over the years, BPM has gained recognition for its bold curatorial choices and its ability to bring together internationally acclaimed artists alongside emerging voices from the region. The festival’s past editions have explored a wide range of themes: Play & Replay (2013) looked at photography’s ability to capture, reinterpret, and reshape memories; L’Autre et le Même (2016) interrogated issues of identity, difference, and belonging; Attraction(s) (2018) focused on gravitational forces in human and artistic interactions; This is the End (2020) reflected on crises, endings, and rebirths; Corps Célestes (2022) ventured into celestial imagery and cosmic inspiration; and Mondes Impossibles (2024) dared to imagine unreal and fantastical photographic worlds.
At its core, BPM is more than just an exhibition—it is a space of dialogue and discovery, a meeting point where photography is constantly questioned, expanded, and redefined. The festival places great emphasis on examining the relationship between photographic production and its contemporary relevance, asking how images respond to evolving artistic practices, technological advances, and global issues such as climate change, social inequality, and economic transformations. With each edition, BPM strengthens its role as a cultural bridge, fostering collaboration between artists, curators, and audiences while continuously pushing the boundaries of what photography can be.
