Black Box Gallery is excited to present a juried group photography exhibition focused on the theme of shadow and light. Photography is fundamentally about capturing how light interacts with the world, creating patterns of brightness and darkness that define what we see in an image.
Shadows are an essential part of this process. They help shape subjects, add depth, and create a sense of dimension, making images more visually engaging. When combined with different qualities of light—whether harsh or soft, direct or diffused—shadows can dramatically change the mood and meaning of a photograph. Many photographers have used strong, graphic shadows in black-and-white work to highlight contrast and structure, while others explore softer, more atmospheric shadows in color photography to create mood, texture, and emotion.
For this exhibition, we are looking for a wide variety of interpretations of shadow and light. We encourage photographers to submit work that shows their unique perspective, whether through bold contrasts, subtle tonal shifts, abstract compositions, or narrative-driven imagery. Our goal is to showcase how contemporary photographers continue to experiment with and reinterpret these essential elements, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling through light and shadow.
