Theme: Shadow and Light.

Black Box Gallery is pleased to announce a group photo exhibit on shadow and light that will be judged. The art of taking pictures of patterns of light and darkness is called photography. In addition to complementing the quality of the light values, shadows add definition and dimension to an image and enhance the relationships between subjects. In black-and-white photography, dramatic shadows and patterns have been used, and in color photography, ethereal and moody shadows and textures have been used. We will investigate a variety of ways that contemporary photographers interpret light and shadow.

Black Box Gallery's founder and director is Todd Johnson. The San Francisco Art Institute is where Todd earned his Master of Fine Arts in Photography. Photolucida (PDX OR), Critical Mass (PDX OR), Dodho Magazine (Barcelona, Spain), and Blue Sky Gallery (PDX OR) all employed him as a portfolio reviewer. Todd has served as an independent curator for exhibits that have been held at 4X Gallery (PDX OR), Mile Post 5, The Waiting Room Gallery (Minneapolis, MN), Linfield College (McMinnville, OR), Gallery Homeland (PDX OR), The Gorilla Art Gallery (San Francisco, CA), and Linfield College (McMinnville, OR). He has 25 years of experience in arts administration and education.

Johnson has had photographic exhibitions in Portland, OR, at the White Box Gallery at The University of Oregon, The Art Gym at Marylhurst University, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Reed College, Linfield College, FalseFront Gallery, and Augen Gallery. Bushwick Open Studios in Brooklyn, New York, Carroll Square Gallery in Washington, DC, Hi Lo Gallery in Olympia, Washington, Davis and Cline Gallery in Ashland, Oregon, Midway Gallery in Bloomington, Illinois, and The Diego Rivera Gallery in San Francisco, California, among others, host national exhibitions.
