Black Box Gallery is pleased to present an upcoming juried group photography exhibition dedicated to the evocative theme of Shadow and Light. This exhibition will explore the fundamental visual language of photography—its intrinsic relationship to illumination and obscurity. Photography, at its core, is a process that records the interaction between light and darkness, revealing not just form but also emotion, atmosphere, and narrative.

Shadows play a crucial role in this visual interplay. They lend depth and structure to an image, enhancing spatial relationships and creating dimensionality. The juxtaposition of light and shadow adds nuance to composition, accentuating textures, shaping mood, and guiding the viewer’s attention. Photographers throughout history have employed strong contrasts and intricate patterns—especially in black and white photography—to highlight the powerful aesthetic of chiaroscuro. Others have embraced the subtlety of color, using shadows to create dreamlike or emotionally resonant scenes filled with ambiguity and feeling.

For this exhibition, we are seeking diverse interpretations of this timeless theme from contemporary photographers. We welcome both traditional and experimental approaches, whether rooted in realism, abstraction, or conceptual work. Submissions may explore technical mastery, storytelling, or poetic expression—what matters most is how artists harness the dynamic tension between shadow and light to create compelling images.
