Black Box Gallery - Color Space: Contemporary Photography

Black Box Gallery is pleased to announce an international juried group exhibition dedicated to the expressive possibilities of color photography. From subtle tonal palettes to bold, vibrant compositions, color has become one of the defining creative tools in contemporary photographic practice. This open call welcomes photographers working across all genres, including landscape, portraiture, architecture, fashion, street, documentary, abstract, conceptual, still life, narrative, nature, and night photography.

The exhibition seeks work that demonstrates how color can shape emotion, guide visual storytelling, influence composition, and transform everyday subjects into compelling photographic experiences. Whether used with restraint or intensity, color has the power to create atmosphere, evoke memory, communicate ideas, and capture the viewer's attention. Black Box Gallery invites artists to submit photographs that showcase innovative, thoughtful, and visually engaging approaches to color in contemporary photography.

Juror: Todd Johnson

The exhibition will be juried by Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery. Johnson earned his MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and has spent more than 25 years working in photography, arts education, curatorial practice, and gallery administration.

Throughout his career, he has served as a portfolio reviewer for respected organizations and platforms including Photolucida in Portland, Critical Mass, Dodho Magazine in Barcelona, and Blue Sky Gallery. As an independent curator, Johnson has organized exhibitions for numerous institutions and galleries, including Linfield College, Gallery Homeland, Mile Post 5, The Waiting Room Gallery, 4X Gallery, and The Gorilla Art Gallery.

Johnson's own photographic work has been widely exhibited throughout Oregon and across the United States, with exhibitions at institutions such as the University of Oregon, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Reed College, Marylhurst University's Art Gym, and Augen Gallery. His national exhibition record also includes venues in New York, Washington, Illinois, Minnesota, and California, reflecting decades of experience as both a practicing artist and curator.
