Black Box Gallery - Color Burst: Contemporary Photography Contest

Theme: Seeing Through Color – A Celebration of Photographic Expression

Black Box Gallery invites you to experience the magic of color through the lens of today’s most innovative photographers. This juried group show is a vibrant exploration of how artists use color not merely as decoration, but as a deep and dynamic storytelling tool. In a single frame, color can guide the viewer’s eye, evoke emotion, create rhythm, and build visual tension—or harmony.

From the deep blues of twilight cityscapes to the blazing reds of summer streets, from the soft pastels of conceptual portraits to the intense saturation of abstract scenes—contemporary color photography is as diverse as it is bold. This exhibition will showcase work across genres including landscape, fashion, still life, narrative, architecture, street photography, and beyond. We are seeking artists who explore the depth and nuance of color in ways that surprise, challenge, and inspire.

About the Juror: Todd Johnson

Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery, will curate this colorful journey. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute with an MFA in Photography, Todd is an established figure in the photography world with decades of experience in curation, critique, and exhibition. His eye for compelling work has guided him as a portfolio reviewer for organizations like Photolucida and Critical Mass, as well as international platforms like Dodho Magazine.

Todd’s curatorial reach extends across multiple art spaces in Portland and beyond, including Blue Sky Gallery and Gallery Homeland. As an exhibiting artist, his photographs have graced walls from Oregon to New York to California. His passion for the photographic arts is matched only by his commitment to fostering creative dialogue and discovery.
