Black Box Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming juried group exhibition dedicated to the theme of shadow and light. At its core, photography is an art form grounded in the observation and recording of luminous contrast—the interplay between illumination and obscurity that shapes how we perceive an image. This exhibition seeks to explore that foundational relationship in its many visual and conceptual forms.
Shadows play a crucial role in defining spatial relationships within a photograph. They introduce depth, contour, and structure, transforming flat surfaces into dynamic compositions. In dialogue with light, shadows enhance tonal variation and guide the viewer’s attention, contributing to the overall atmosphere and narrative of the image. Historically, photographers have harnessed the power of stark, dramatic shadows in black-and-white work, emphasizing contrast, geometry, and abstraction. At the same time, contemporary practices have expanded into more subtle territories, where shadows in color photography evoke mood, ambiguity, and a sense of the ephemeral.
This call invites submissions that engage with shadow and light across a broad spectrum of approaches. We are particularly interested in how contemporary photographers interpret these elements—whether through formal experimentation, conceptual inquiry, or poetic expression. From high-contrast compositions to delicate tonal gradations, from sharply defined silhouettes to diffuse, atmospheric textures, the exhibition aims to present a diverse and compelling exploration of how light and shadow continue to shape photographic vision today.
