Black Box Gallery - Camera Work: Black and White Open Call

Black Box Gallery is proud to announce its upcoming Black and White Juried Group Photography Exhibition, a showcase devoted to the timeless artistry and expressive power of monochrome photography.

Black and white imagery carries with it a sense of history and refinement — a visual language that has shaped the evolution of photography since its earliest days. It evokes nostalgia, elegance, and emotion, revealing form, light, and shadow in their purest essence. Yet, within this long and luminous tradition, contemporary photographers continue to reinvent what black and white can mean. Their modern visions, techniques, and aesthetics bring new life to this classic medium, transforming tradition into innovation.

For this exhibition, Black Box Gallery seeks a wide range of photographic styles, subjects, and interpretations — from traditional film-based works to experimental digital processes. The goal is to create a diverse and dynamic dialogue between classic craft and contemporary vision.

Juror: Todd JohnsonThe exhibition will be juried by Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery. Johnson holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and brings over 25 years of experience in arts education and administration. His curatorial background includes exhibitions at institutions such as Linfield College, Gallery Homeland, The Waiting Room Gallery, and The Gorilla Art Gallery.

As a practicing photographer, Johnson has exhibited widely, including at venues such as The White Box Gallery (University of Oregon), The Art Gym (Marylhurst University), and Augen Gallery (Portland, OR), as well as national exhibitions in New York, Washington, D.C., Illinois, and California.

Through this exhibition, Black Box Gallery aims to celebrate the enduring beauty and ever-evolving dialogue of black and white photography — a tribute to its craft, history, and continued relevance in the visual arts.
