The fourth edition of the August Sander Award for portrait photography, generously donated by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach, is set to take place in 2024 in collaboration with Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne.
This award aims to champion emerging artistic perspectives in contemporary photography, aligning with the principles of objective and conceptual photography. Embracing the legacy of August Sander's impactful portrait photographs, applicants are encouraged to explore the theme of the human portrait. The award, presented biennially, is open to national and international artists up to the age of 40, specializing in photography. The prize includes a 5,000 € endowment, and the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur will arrange an exhibition of the winner's work, subject to individual agreement.
Submissions should consist of well-developed series, with a maximum of 20 photographic prints. The focus is on thematically cohesive image groups or sequences, and individual images will not be considered. Submitted works should not have previously received awards in other competitions.
