Visual Ascent, a new photography competition organized by Arc'teryx and Fisheye, invites photographers from around the world to explore climbing beyond its conventional representation. Whether you are an experienced climber, an outdoor enthusiast, a passionate photographer, or simply fascinated by rock and vertical landscapes, this competition offers an opportunity to reconsider the way we look at height.
The challenge is not simply to photograph climbing in action, but to create images in which sport becomes a starting point for artistic exploration. Visual Ascent encourages photographers to investigate the visual relationship between the human body, the rock, the route, and the surrounding environment, creating photographs that communicate sensation as much as physical movement.
From the smallest texture in a boulder to the immense scale of a mountain face, climbing offers an extraordinary range of visual possibilities. Photographers are invited to move between these extremes, playing with scale and perspective to create images that can make a climber appear monumental, fragile, suspended, or almost invisible within the landscape.
The competition welcomes bold and experimental approaches. Participants are encouraged to challenge familiar compositions through radical framing, unusual points of view, low-angle photography, extreme perspectives, distorted proportions, unexpected lines, dramatic negative space, and unconventional vanishing points. The goal is to make the viewer feel the height and tension contained within the image.
The body itself can become a central visual element: a hand gripping the rock, a foot searching for balance, muscles under tension, a figure suspended between movements, or a climber seemingly defying gravity. Equally important can be the traces left by climbing—the shapes of the rock, chalk marks, ropes, shadows, textures, and lines that transform the landscape into a visual composition.
Visual Ascent asks photographers to look beyond the spectacular action shot and discover the poetic, abstract, intimate, and psychological dimensions of climbing. What does vertigo look like? How can an image communicate the sensation of being exposed to open space? How can photography transform a familiar route into something strange, monumental, or dreamlike?
Under the theme “Visual Ascent,” participants are invited to reinvent the visual vocabulary of climbing and to create photographs that blur the boundaries between outdoor sport, landscape, and contemporary art.
