Looking for a fresh perspective and a new way to experience the great outdoors? Visual Ascent, a photography competition organized by Arc'teryx and Fisheye, invites photographers, climbing enthusiasts, outdoor lovers, and curious observers to turn their cameras toward the vertical world and explore the many ways climbing can be seen, felt, and represented.
More than a competition about sporting performance, Visual Ascent challenges photographers to rethink the traditional image of climbing. The objective is to tell the story of the route, the rock, and the climber from unexpected perspectives, creating images in which the intimacy of the boulder can coexist with the vastness and scale of the landscape.
Photographers are encouraged to experiment with the relationship between sport and art, transforming climbing into a visual language of movement, balance, tension, exposure, and space. The rock face becomes more than a backdrop: it becomes an active element in the composition and a playground for the imagination.
Radical framing, dramatic low-angle perspectives, dizzying viewpoints, unusual compositions, unexpected vanishing points, extreme changes in scale, and unconventional uses of space are all encouraged. Look closely at the details of the rock, then step back to reveal the monumental scale of a route. Capture the tension of a body suspended above the ground, the subtle gestures of a climber preparing for the next move, or the relationship between a tiny human figure and an immense vertical landscape.
Visual Ascent invites photographers to explore the sensations associated with height: adrenaline, concentration, freedom, exposure, vertigo, vulnerability, and exhilaration. Images can focus on the physical challenge of climbing while also exploring its poetic and emotional dimensions.
Under the theme “Visual Ascent,” participants are encouraged to break away from conventional climbing iconography and create images that make viewers experience the height rather than simply observe it. Let gravity, scale, movement, and perspective guide your imagination, and discover new ways to photograph the vertical world.
