In the wake of the impactful "Transition" exhibition in 2022, Fotogalerie Friedrichshain and analogueNOW! are thrilled to announce their second collaborative venture, extending an invitation to film photographers and artists adept in analogue techniques for their upcoming international group exhibition themed "Excess."

Quoting William Blake, "The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom," this exhibition aims to explore the multifaceted concept of "Excess," often perceived negatively in various contexts, from breaching speed limits to environmentally harmful overconsumption. The theme delves into personal realms, encompassing self-harm, self-expression through body and mind, and the overindulgence in food, substances, or emotions. In the realm of analogue photography, excess in light, movement, or exposure time is typically considered a hindrance.

The concept of excess, inherently relative, prompts contemplation on societal norms and regulations. Is it a deviation or a call for increased freedom? Does it lead to wisdom or impose restraint?

Open Call for Projects and Applications: Artists are invited to explore the theme of "Excess" across social, environmental, political, or intimate perspectives, employing analogue photographic processes. Submissions should feature recent projects (completed within the last 5 years), allowing for long-term projects within this timeframe or works based on archival material.

Exhibition Dates: March 22, 2024 – May 10, 2024

Submission Guidelines:

  • Submit up to 15 images as jpgs (1600 pixels on the longest side) with filenames: lastname-01.jpg, lastname-02.jpg, etc.

  • Provide a PDF with personal information, a short bio (up to 50 words), and an artist statement (up to 150 words).

Selected photographers will be notified by February 18th.

Payment: A fee of 12 Euros per submitted project; early bird pricing at 7 euros until December 31st. The fee supports selected artists, with payment made via PayPal on the website.

Exhibition Prints: Photographers can either deliver prints to Fotogalerie Friedrichshain or opt for printing by the gallery (fees billed to artists). Instructions for shipping or printing will be provided to selected photographers, and framing options will be discussed.

Use Rights: Photographers retain full image rights. Selected artists grant nonexclusive use rights to Fotogalerie Friedrichshain and analogueNOW! for promotion across various platforms.

About Fotogalerie Friedrichshain: Established in 1985, Fotogalerie Friedrichshain is East Germany's oldest photography gallery, showcasing the works of renowned German and international photographers. It attracts 5000-10000 visitors annually and actively promotes social and educational programs.
