Following the impactful exhibition "Transition" in 2022, Fotogalerie Friedrichshain and analogueNOW! proudly announce their second collaborative endeavor, inviting film photographers and artists proficient in analogue techniques to participate in an upcoming international group exhibition themed "Excess."

"Excess" is often perceived negatively: from exceeding speed limits to environmentally damaging overconsumption, or even the association with pleasure causing guilt or potential peril, or death. This theme traverses personal domains, manifesting in self-harm or self-expression through the body and mind, observed in overindulgence in food, substances, or emotions. Within analogue photography, excess in light, movement, or exposure time is deemed a hindrance.
The concept of excess is relative, demanding reflection on its societal norms and regulation. Is it a deviation or a demand for increased freedom? Is it a path to wisdom or a restraint?
Participation in the Open Call: Projects and Application Artists are invited to explore the theme of "excess" across social, environmental, political, or intimate perspectives or within analogue photographic processes. Projects submitted should be recent (completed in the last 5 years), allowing long-term projects within this timeframe or works based on archival material.
Exhibition Dates: March 22, 2024 – May 10, 2024
Submission Guidelines:
Submit up to 15 images as jpgs (1600 pixels on the longest side) named: lastname-01.jpg, lastname-02.jpg, etc.
A PDF with personal information, a short bio (up to 50 words), and an artist statement (up to 150 words).
Selected photographers notified by February 18th.
Payment: 12 Euros per submitted project; early bird price 7 euros until December 31st. The fee supports selected artists. Payment via PayPal on the website.
Exhibition Prints:
Deliver prints to Fotogalerie Friedrichshain or opt for printing by the gallery (fees billed to artists).
Instructions provided to selected photographers for shipping or printing. Framing options to be discussed.
Use Rights: Photographers retain full image rights. Selected artists grant nonexclusive use rights to Fotogalerie Friedrichshain and analogueNOW! for promotion across various platforms.
About Fotogalerie Friedrichshain: Established in 1985, Fotogalerie Friedrichshain is East Germany's oldest photography gallery, exhibiting renowned German and international photographers. It hosts around 5000-10000 visitors yearly and promotes social and educational programs.
About analogueNOW!: Founded in 2013, analogueNOW! advocates for contemporary analogue photography. It organizes exhibitions, workshops, and collaborates with partners to nurture learning and exhibition opportunities for photographers of all levels. The analogueNOW! PhotoWeekend is a highlight event occurring biennially in Berlin, fostering an international network for analogue photography.
